SUMMARY:A Convenient Villain: Charles A. Lindbergh's Remarkable and Controversial Legacy Preparing the U.S. for War
DESCRIPTION:“A Convenient Villain: Charles A. Lindbergh’s Remarkable and Controversial Legacy Preparing the U.S. for War“\, is a new biography of Charles Lindbergh written from a unique perspective: a Jewish aerospace engineer.\nSpeaker: Jonathan D. Reich\, MD\, M Sc Engineering \nCharles Lindbergh may be the most controversial figure of the Twentieth Century. His pioneering flight across the Atlantic Ocean\, the kidnapping and murder of his son\, and his political advocacy made him one of the most famous men of his era. His legacy is clouded by apocryphal stories\, allegations of anti-Semitism and racism\, and efforts to ignore his contributions to American security and society. The constant repetition of allegations\, without analysis\, has resulted in generations of Jews being convinced that he was evil. \nThe truth is much more complicated and nuanced. While Lindbergh opposed Jewish interests in the run-up to World War II\, he never denied the right of Jews to advocate nor minimized German oppression. He canceled visits to Germany as a protest after Kristallnacht\, he was the only man who negotiated with the Germans who addressed Jewish grievances\, and he used his influence to try to get Jews out of Germany. \nA Convenient Villain traces Lindbergh’s contribution to U.S. preparation for World War II\, his scientific advances\, and his advocacy. Lindbergh’s pre-World War II advocacy is judged from a distinct vantage point: a Jewish generation that matured after the Six-Day War and carried forward a newly confident\, less insecure American-Jewish identity as a result. Lindbergh’s legacy is compared to President Roosevelt’s\, who obstructed Jewish immigration to the U.S. There are surprising lessons to be learned for those concerned with today’s anti-Semitism. \nDr. Jonathan D. Reich is a cardiologist on the faculty at Johns Hopkins and Stanford Schools of Medicine. He was an aerospace engineer prior to going to medical school. He has spoken about Lindbergh’s legacy at the Mayo Clinic\, the National Museum of Health and Medicine\, the Missouri Historical Society\, and various World War II and aerospace museums. He has been invited to speak at the ceremonies commemorating the 100th anniversary of Lindbergh’s trans-Atlantic flight in May 2027. \nPart of Northwest Neighbors Village Virtual Speaker Series.

SUMMARY:DC Villages Advocacy & Lobbying Workshop
DESCRIPTION:DC Villages Collaborative (DCVC) is hosting its third informative and interactive Advocacy Workshop designed to equip Villages and aging advocates with the tools\, confidence\, and shared language needed to influence policy at a critical moment for aging in the District. This timely Advocacy Workshop is designed to prepare for the 2026 policy and political changes ahead and how they affects our Village network. \nAs our City moves toward the November 2026 elections\, important shifts are on the horizon including changes in DC Council and Mayoral leadership and the implementation of ranked choice voting for the first time in District elections. At the same time\, the District’s annual Spring budget cycle will determine funding priorities for aging services\, DACL support\, housing\, transportation\, and the programs that make aging in community possible. \n\nWhy This Workshop Matters\nVillage leaders and members represent one of the most civically engaged and reliable voting blocs in the District. Understanding how the budget and election systems work empowers our community to advocate with clarity\, credibility\, and one unified voice. \nIn a year of structural changes — new ballots\, leadership turnover\, and shifting priorities – informed engagement is essential. This workshop ensures that DC’s Village movement is prepared\, proactive\, and positioned to protect and advance the interests of older adults across the city. \n\nWho Should Attend\nThis workshop is open to everyone in the DCVC community – not just advocacy committee members. \nYou should attend if you are a: \n\nVillage leader or board member\nStaff person or volunteer\nEngaged Village member\nPartner invested in aging equity in DC\n\nIf you care about strengthening Villages and advancing equity for older adults\, this session is for you! If you cannot attend in person\, the session will be recorded and supporting materials will be distributed via email following the meeting. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn\n\nA clear overview of the DC budget cycle and where Village advocacy can make the greatest impact\nInsight into how the 2026 elections could reshape Council committees\, oversight priorities\, and funding decisions\nAn introduction to ranked choice voting and what it means for senior voters\nGuidance on how Villages can engage consistently and strategically\, not just during hearings and the budget cycle\, but year-round
